Close to Spain and to Andorra in the Pyrenees, the French department of Ariège has retained all its authenticity and unspoilt natural environment. Discover Ariège in the south of France

Ruines d'un château cathare sur les montagnes de l'Ariège

The Ariège watchword is, without a doubt, nature! Here you’ll find a vast mountain wilderness with game preserve areas that are full of different wildlife species. And you may even be lucky (or unlucky) enough to spot an eagle or a wild bear!
But Ariège is not just about nature, it’s also a department steeped in history and culture. Indeed, you'll be able to visit mysterious prehistoric caves, including some of the largest, most unique and world-famous examples.
Next you’ll enjoy visiting the typical little villages that cling to the hillsides of Ariège. Soak up the very special atmosphere of these characterful villages of yesteryear and the specific architectural styles of Cathar Country.

The absolute must-dos and must-sees of your campsite holiday in Ariège

Architecture de l'église de Saint Lizier dans l'Ariège

You could begin by visiting one of the castles of Ariège. Among the hundred or so castles to be found in this department, there’s bound to be one that will appeal to you! For example, you can climb up to the castle of Montségur or visit that of Foix, which offered sanctuary to persecuted Cathars.
Then, head for the world-famous prehistoric caves such as the Niaux cave which contributed largely to making Ariège an international name. Discover the cave’s “black lounge” and admire the black-line wall drawings of animals that date back to the Magdalenian period, some 14000 years back.
Finally, you can go exploring the most beautiful traditional villages of Ariège, oozing with authenticity and well worth taking the time to stop at. From the half-timbered houses to the covered galleries built entirely of wood, you’ll love the medieval bastide of Mirepoix, as well as the Ariège town that probably has the richest history, Saint-Lizier.

Randonneurs dans les montagnes des Pyrénées l'été dans l'Ariège

It’s time to put your hiking shoes on if you’re staying in Ariège, and if you’re already a keen walker, you won’t be disappointed! Walk across the mountains from village to village, stopping for breaks at the mountain refuges and taking footpaths that walkers of any level can follow!
You can also make the most of the 400 kilometres of mountain streams and rivers that traverse the department and invite you to try kayaking or rafting. Speaking of rivers... Dotted with multiple mountain lakes that feed these rivers, Ariège is truly trout country, much to the delight of fishing enthusiasts.
Many original sites await you in the heart of the Pyrenees of Ariège, like Luzenac where you’ll find the world’s largest talc quarry, or Vals where part of the church is buried under rock. Not forgetting of course the swimming pools and activities organised by your campsite!
